The Grove - Programs & Services

The Grove Nursing home offers a full slate of activities and events — there is always something that will appeal to each resident.  In a given month, residents can participate in discussion groups, exercise and restorative care programs, manicures, sing-a-longs and music, art and craft classes, book clubs,  film night, special outings and hot lunches services.  Through the popular adopt-a-grandparent program, they engage in activities and conversation with grade seven students from St. Joseph’s Separate School in Arnprior and in the monthly Diners’ Club, residents have an opportunity to visit cultures throughout the world — without leaving home.

Our Adult Day Program enables residents to mix with a whole new group of people three times a week, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Please take a moment to learn about the following services...

The Adult Day Program

The Day Program operates at the Grove three times a week Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday under the care of coordinator Audrey Edwards. This program is open to members of the community including those who have Alzheimer's and/or dementia. Activities are structured to highlight the strengths of these individuals and in groups they are incorporated into memory stimulation games like crossword puzzles and trivia games. The Day Program attendees also have music, entertainment and crafts geared to the level of ability. Staff also cue attendees about taking medication and washroom breaks.

The Day Program further benefits the attendees, most who are in early stages of the disease, to become familiar with the Grove facility and staff. This makes any eventual transition from their homes to the Grove much easier for them and for their family members if the client ever has to be admitted to a Long Term Care facility.

Perhaps one of the biggest of the Day Program is for the family members, especially the primary caregiver. One of the Day programs goals is to offset Caregiver respite hours that they receive from community programs such as CCAC. The effort has also been made to hold the support group meetings at the same time as the Day Program so the caregiver has the opportunity to speak with others in their situation. Three times a week the caregiver gets a break and the opportunity to take care of themselves knowing their loved one is getting the chance to socialize, participate in some activities and take part in a pleasurable dining experience.

The pleasurable dining experience is important for clients to make their own meal selection from a select menu, and on a weekly basis be involved in the making of a meal that is shared with a small group of resident from the Nursing home. Tables are set properly including tablecloths and all staff is available to help. It's a time to enjoy some good food in the company of friends in a warm and inviting atmosphere. The baking program offers the client the chance to participate in a past activity that they may not be able to do at home any longer. Ths program involves making cookies, breaks and or special seasonal items that the client can enjoy that day at their afternoon nourishment.

In collaboration with the Day Program arrangements can also be made to address personal care issues, such as bath if unable to do so at home.

Caregivers or individuals who are interested in this program are encouraged to contact Audrey Edwards at  613-623-6547 ext. 229. Audrey will arrange for you to tour the facility, observe the activities, meet some of the staff and answer any questions and concerns you may have. The Day program carries a minimal charge of $5 per day which includes lunch but not transportation.

The Adult Day Program at the Grove is made possible through funding provided by the Renfrew County United Way.
